Keira’s COVID diary

Week 1

Week one of lockdown came as a big shock to me. There were rumours that the UK could be going into lockdown but part of me didn’t want to believe it and I wasn’t prepared for how badly it would affect me. Being told that we were no longer able to leave the house, more than once a day and that outdoor spaces and well-known walks were now closed, caused me to feel very overwhelmed, anxious and upset.

It took me a while to come to terms with what we were allowed and not allowed to do, but after accepting the situation, I began researching the area where I live. I spent a long time on google maps, looking at the terrain and noting down new walkways that I discovered. Within the first week of lockdown I had found new walks and places that were still open and that I could still go to.

These photos were taken during one of the first new walks I did, during week one of lockdown. It was a beautiful walk, up through the fields onto the mountains, where I was able to look down over the whole of Brecon, with the Brecon Beacons towering above the town. The walk back led me through the fields that were full of sheep and new born lambs, some of the first that I had seen this spring. I felt a lot better after doing this walk. Not only had I surprised myself physically, by how far I walked and how good I felt, but also mentally. I didn’t feel as trapped or overwhelmed as I realised that there were still new places I could safely explore and doing so meant that there would be lots of new photography opportunities to come.
