The British Heart Foundation in 2020 described LONG COVID as…

…a term to describe the effects of Covid-19 that continue for weeks or months beyond the initial illness.
— British Heart Foundation

If you have LONG COVID, you are definitely not alone with what you are going through.  Furthermore, Muddy Care has a library of effective tools and strategies that will help you manage many of the symptoms of LONG COVID better. Muddy Care can help put the ‘WHOLE’ back into your health and wellness.  We are education specialists in holistic health and wellness for the not so healthy and well.

The medical world is increasingly gaining an understanding of COVID.  A complete picture has not been fully revealed yet in relation to the number of people suffering from LONG COVID and won’t be for several years.  However, research suggests as of December 2020, that around one in five people who test positive for Covid-19 have symptoms for five weeks or longer. For around one in ten people, they last 12 weeks or longer.

By December 2020, COVID had reached all seven continents of the world, even infecting a Chilean military and research base in Antarctica.  The high numbers of people suffering with LONG COVID is because COVID is such a new and contagious virus, creating a global pandemic for a population that currently has minimal anti body resistance to it.

Medical and health professionals, scientists and organisations will be researching LONG COVID for many years.  However, amongst the worry and your own personal illness journey, there are some very real positive aspects to take on board if you do have LONG COVID.

First of all, the amount of time, money and research that is being allocated to LONG COVID by medical and health bodies is significant and not just in the UK, but globally.  That means that the research, understanding, support and services people with LONG COVID will receive will be significantly improved compared to that which was present pre-COVID, for those people suffering long term effects of viral damage.

Viruses have always caused long term damage to some people so this is not a new phenomenon.   It has been known for years that many viruses can cause long term health effects.  Thousands of people in the UK have either experienced the long-term effects of a virus pre-COVID or are living with chronic conditions as the result of serious viral damage.  Our CEO of Muddy Care is one of those many people.  She is a retired GB athlete, fit and healthy when a virus significantly damaged her heart in 2011.  In 2014 her medical journey became much more complex because of further complications resulting from a virus.   Andy Cole, former Manchester United and England football player, is another athlete who has very recently communicated to the public how his life was significantly altered by a virus.  Both these people now have serious chronic conditions as a result of significant viral damage to their bodies.  Viruses do not discriminate whether you are fit and healthy or old and infirm.  However, what this does mean is there are already thousands of people in the UK who have experienced the long-term symptoms and health effects caused by a virus.  They can offer help, support and advice about how to cope with the long-term effects of viruses and advise medical and health professionals in reference to how they have managed their long-term symptoms which significantly replicate the long-term symptoms of COVID.

Muddy Care fully appreciates the diversity and depth of the effects and impacts that viral infections can have on people’s lives. So, what can Muddy Care do to help you?

Muddy Care focuses on teaching you (we are professional teachers) learning tools and mechanisms, management strategies, support structures and learning activities that will work towards enhancing your holistic health and wellbeing, specific to the symptoms and impacts caused by your viral damage.  These will allow you to manage your conditions, symptoms and impacts of illness more effectively and independently, improving your quality of life.

If you have any of the symptoms listed below, we can help you through our educational rehabilitation services.  We will provide you with personalised teaching and learning workshops that will be tailored to your individualised needs.

  • Changes in your ability to socialise and interact with people,

  • Unable to exercise how you could pre-COVID,

  • Unable to carry out your daily routine like you used to be able to do,

Muddy Care works collaboratively with a number of organisations that we will signpost you to if we feel they can help you too.  We are also building positive working relationships with two NHS University teaching hospitals in South Wales.

Muddy Care is a community that will make the present and futures of those with LONG COVID become just a little bit brighter.  You will automatically be invited to join our community when your register with our services.  There you can meet and talk to other people suffering from these symptoms and impacts in a safe and supportive environment, immediately strengthening your social health and wellness.

Emerging evidence and patient testimony is showing a growing number of people who contract COVID-19 cannot shake off the effects of the virus months after initially falling ill. Symptoms are wide-ranging and fluctuating, and can include breathlessness, chronic fatigue, “brain fog”, anxiety and stress.

So what does a LONG COVID future hold?

There is a great deal yet to be understood about LONG COVID, not least how long its effects will tend to last and how severe those effects might be. As with most chronic conditions it is likely to be a case of considerable variability across those affected. But one thing is certain. The support and care provided by Muddy Care and its community is for life, or as long as you need it.

As a community we are building both care and support, but also learning from one another ways of moving forward positively into our respective futures. From our respective experiences we are also building a precious knowledge base of how LONG COVID and other chronic conditions can best be managed and our lives lived with purpose, meaning and joy.
